Tunnel Improvements for 2012 Olympics
Blackwall Tunnel, London – June 2009
Recently FGB were involved in a project to assess the maintained headroom within the North-bound Blackwall Tunnel for possible improvements prior to the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games.
FGB were asked to provide accurate digital cross sections at 50m intervals along the length of the 1.6km Tunnel which routes beneath the River Thames and the 02 Arena to connect North & South-East London.
GPS stations were positioned at each end of the tunnel to create a fixed base-line, the northbound tunnel was then closed from 2am – 7am for FGB to undertake the survey work and scheduled maintenance work to be carried out.
FGB traversed with a total station instrument through the length of the tunnel providing fixed control then with reflectorless instruments, sections of readings were recorded at 50m intervals.
The raw data was processed using Leica Geo-Office and LSS to create cross sections, that were provided to the client in an Autocad format.
